\CA letter of recommendation for Ms. Ruth E. Davis



\JI have know Ms. Davis slightly more than one year. During that time she has
taken three graduate courses from me: (1) a data structures course patterned
after Stanford's CS206 in Symbolic Computation, 
(2) a seminar on the mathematical theory of computation,
and (3) a reading course in conjunction with her Master's thesis. I have found
the quality of her work to be far above that of the other San Jose State students
I have met.

She is quite bright and able to apply her wit in novel situations. She is outgoing
and willing to speak her mind. Indeed, strong competition should be good for her.
she has suffered from a common affliction of the more intelligent: not
being suitably challenged to sustain her interest. However in my work with
her I have not found this to be a difficulty. When she is presented with non-trivial
problems, given in a context which explains their relevance, 
she responds exceptionally well.

I have no reservations in recommending her for graduate study.
